In circulation – $820 billion, as of April 2007.

Assuming all of it is in the USA (which is wrong, 1/3 to half of it is overseas) and 300 million people in the States, means there’s only $2,733 per person of cash in circulation… best case. Less than three thousand! In reality, even less.

97% of all American money only exists in digital form.

I think it’s wise to have some cash on hand. Maybe enough to last a month and also to buy plane tickets for everyone in the family.
